The role of the Consular social service department

The Consular Social Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with Chilean Consulates, must make the necessary arrangements for allowing relatives to send money, documents, mail and obtain information on the health condition and course of proceedings of the detainee.

Who may obtain information?

Chilean nationals requiring information regarding a direct Chilean relative detained abroad.

Requisites

This service can only be requested by the direct relative of the detained person (spouse, mother, father, children, siblings, uncles/aunts and nephews/nieces) with clear facts as to the possibility that his/her relative is detained, as well as information regarding the foreign country and/or city where he/she allegedly is located. In addition you will be subject to submit the following documents:

Documents that prove direct kinship;

Birth certificate of detained person

Detention place, Court and case number (only if known to the relative).

Product

Facilitate necessary arrangements and be informed on the case as well as keeping an information channel for direct relatives of nationals detained abroad.

Observations

The general conditions for communication between the detainee and his/her family will depend on the willingness of the detainee to provide information and the provisions applicable at the place where the national is serving sentence.
