Thursday, May 31, 2018

Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero met with Women's Minister Isabel Plá at the Foreign Ministry to talk with ambassadors and diplomatic representatives in Chile from Australia, France, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada, and Norway. The objective of this initiative, promoted by the Secretary of State, was to invite them to create forums for dialogue to learn about their experiences and legislation on gender issues.

Issues such as progress towards legal equality, greater presence of women in places of leadership, greater personal autonomy and economic independence with the incorporation of more and more paid work and entrepreneurship, together with the gradual advance towards a culture of co-responsibility in upbringing, were some of the topics addressed.

The meeting also highlighted that the Ministry of Women and Gender Equality has been a turning point in the work and actions that the State of Chile has undertaken in the area of gender equality.

The parties also agreed that eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, but also crucial for accelerating sustainable development. In this regard, they noted that the empowerment of women and girls and their participation in the public sphere has been shown on numerous occasions to have a multiplier effect on growth.

Another of the topics discussed was the work of the gender roundtable in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, created to accompany and promote the integration of the principles of equality and human rights in the Ministry, with particular emphasis on the effective incorporation of the gender perspective in the organization, as well as on the strategic actions associated with Chile's foreign policy in all its spheres.

It should be noted that, this morning, the Head of Chilean diplomacy participated in the "Interministerial Committee for Equal Rights and Gender Equality", convened by Minister Plá herself and held in the offices of her Ministry.
