Monday, November 26, 2018

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero, informed today the decision of the Government of the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, to bring back to Chile a group of fellow countrymen who were in very complex situations in Venezuela.

The flight will arrive Tuesday morning at 7:30 AM and will be received by government authorities.

"The message from the government of President Sebastián Piñera and this Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that these Chileans who are going through very difficult times in Venezuela due to the situation that the country is undergoing, are not alone," said the Secretary of State, adding that "this is one of the central ideas of our management, to deal as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Chileans who are facing situations of extreme vulnerability outside our borders".

Thanks to the Program to Strengthen Consular and Migratory Policy, 75 Chileans have already returned from Venezuela. This program was implemented in 2015 and is aimed at informing, assisting and supporting Chileans and their families living abroad in vulnerable situations, through the design and development of consular social services of Consular Assistance. Since its creation to date, it has materialized the return of 332 compatriots from different countries.

Chancellor Ampuero added that those who return tomorrow "are Chileans who face situations of extreme vulnerability, which in some cases are completely unprotected".
