Press release on the situation in Syria

Saturday, April 14, 2018

The Government of Chile reiterates its condemnation in the strongest terms of the criminal use of chemical weapons in an attack on April 7th in Douma, Syrian Arab Republic.

It also condemns the use of chemical weapons at any time, place, circumstance or act, and recalls that such conduct is contrary to international law and, in particular, to human rights.

As the Secretary-General of the United Nations has pointed out, it is essential that the international powers agree on a mechanism to prevent the use of chemical weapons and establish responsibilities for the use of chemical weapons in Syria. In fulfilling this mission, no country can avoid responsibility.

We must make every effort to prevent the crisis in Syria from escalating into a regional or global crisis, affecting more people and weakening peace. We therefore call for the utmost caution in these actions.
