Minister Ampuero in Hiroshima: "We want a world free of nuclear weapons"

Sunday, September 16, 2018

On his first day of official visit to Japan, Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero traveled to the city of Hiroshima to pay tribute to the victims of the 1945 atomic bomb catastrophe.

The Secretary of State met with the Mayor of the city, Matsui Kazumi, visited the Peace Memorial Museum, signed the visitors' book and made a floral offering on the cenotaph of the Peace Monument.

This is the first official visit of a member of President Sebastián Piñera's cabinet to this city and to the Peace Memorial Park, for which he expressed on behalf of the Government the "admiration for the Japanese people, for their courage and strength to overcome these traumas and to be able to look again at the future, as they have brilliantly demonstrated".

He also expressed his admiration, respect and solidarity towards the survivors of the bomb, the "Hibakusha" and their descendants, "men and women who rose up and emerged from this tragedy and overcame the horrors to rebuild their lives and their city, literally from the ashes".

The Secretary of State emphasized that Chile "has been and will continue to be in all multilateral instances an active promoter of non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament in the world. We want a world free of nuclear weapons, as clear as that. We are with Japan in this chimerical but not impossible effort.

Chile is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, in force since 1970, which is the cornerstone of the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime. Likewise, in September 2017, at the UN General Assembly in New York, our country signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, thus underscoring Chile's commitment to peace.
