Foreign Minister Ampuero meets Swiss Secretary of State for Economic Affairs

Friday, November 30, 2018

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero, received in audience the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs of Switzerland, Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, who arrived in Chile accompanied by a delegation linked to the corporate sector to increase economic-commercial relations and reactivate the process of Modernization of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Chile and the countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), integrated by Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister highlighted the 100 years of Swiss diplomatic presence in Chile, a period in which both countries were able to develop close ties in many strategic areas, particularly in the area of cooperation and energy, which are achievements based on trust.

On the other hand, the authorities expressed their support and commitment to free trade and to the multilateral trade system, expressing their concern for the protectionist tendencies observed in this field.

In this sense, both parties exchanged opinions regarding the intensification of trade tensions at the global level and the interesting integration initiatives and regional alliances held in Latin America, such as the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur, which opens the doors for an eventual rapprochement with EFTA.

Finally, both authorities expressed their willingness to advance the preparatory work for the modernization of the Chile - EFTA FTA.
