Chilean scientist Alexis Kalergis elected to ICGEB's Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Alexis Kalergis, Director of the Millennium Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy (IMII), was appointed last week as the new Scientific Representative to the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).

The ICGEB is an international organization, part of the United Nations system, dedicated to advanced research and training in molecular biology and biotechnology, with special attention to the needs of the developing world. It plays a leading role in issues and research related to biosafety and the environmentally sustainable use of biotechnology; issues of high relevance to developing countries, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, plant biotechnology, as well as basic research topics that can be effectively addressed through a science-based approach, focusing on research and biomedical and agricultural applications.

The appointment of Dr. Kalergis, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will strengthen the participation of national scientists in the field of life sciences in international projects, as well as access to training in cutting-edge techniques and knowledge, integrating national science into the one of the most relevant networks worldwide.
