Chile opens Embassy in Azerbaijan

Wednesday, December 26, 2018

On December 17, Chile opened its Embassy in Azerbaijan. The opening of this diplomatic representation obeys a commitment assumed by President Sebastián Piñera in his previous government and will allow the expansion of trade, investment, cooperation and political dialogue between both countries.

The new embassy will be in charge of the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, advisor Gabriel Jara Maldonado, and will operate in the facilities of the Colombian embassy in that country. Last August, Presidents Sebastián Piñera and Iván Duque ratified the decision to open this embassy. In 2014, Chile and Colombia had signed an agreement in this sense, within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2012 for the common use of facilities and infrastructure of Embassies and Consulates in third States.

Diplomatic relations between Chile and Azerbaijan were established on November 3, 1994. In recent years, Azerbaijan, through its diplomatic representation in Chile, has sought a greater rapprochement in trade matters, exploring possibilities of increasing the exchange of products and positioning itself as a platform for exports to other Central Asian countries.

Azerbaijan is a transition economy of 9.5 million inhabitants and a major economic player in the Caucasus region due to its large oil and natural gas reserves.

At the same time, the establishment of a diplomatic mission in Baku will give greater visibility to Chile in a region of great importance for its natural resources, geographical location and demographic potential. It is, without a doubt, an important milestone in Chilean foreign policy.

In addition, the agreement with Colombia reflects the excellent level of bilateral relations between the two countries and is yet another sign of cooperation between members of the Pacific Alliance.
