Chancellery Submits Records of Consuls Case to CDE

Wednesday, December 26, 2018

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero, instructed the General Directorate of Legal Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately send to the State Defense Council all the information in the possession of this Secretariat of State regarding the case by which consuls Frank Sinclair and Gustavo Cantuarias will be formalized on January 11, contributing to the defense of the interests of the State that could be affected within the framework of the investigation conducted by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Both officials are currently the subject of a summary investigation conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the purpose of establishing eventual administrative responsibilities and, in a preventive manner, they were separated from the exercise of the functions they performed abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms its total rejection of any irregular situation or conduct, especially in the case of our consulates abroad, whose primary tasks include assisting Chilean citizens.

"As Ministry, this morning we have given the CDE all the information available to contribute to justice and we have taken the disciplinary measures of which the law empowers us," said Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero. "These actions, of course, do not prejudge what should be resolved by the courts and throughout the process must respect the presumption of innocence of the officials involved in it," he added.
