Minister Ampuero commented on Adriana Rivas’s arrest in Australia

Tuesday, 19 February, 2019

"We will always support the decisions of the Chilean Judiciary System especially if they address human rights issues".

"Our Embassy in Australia is following Adriana Rivas's arrest, requested by Chilean tribunals on the grounds of human rights, closely". With these words, Chancellor Roberto Ampuero addressed Manuel Contreras ex-secretary's arrest in Sydney which was requested by Chilean tribunals on account of human rights. Also, he added that "as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs we will always support the decisions of the Chilean Judiciary System especially if they deal with human rights issues".

Australia received an extradition request before Rivas's arrest. She is prosecuted as co-perpetrator of aggravated kidnapping offences in the Calle Conferencia I, Calle Conferencia II and Reinalda Pereira cases.

The Australian Judiciary System will now have to examine if the conditions for the request are gathered. The interests of Chile will be represented in the extradition procedure by the Attorney-General's Department of Australia as Chile is not part of the process, in accordance with Australia's legislation.

It should be noted that a bilateral Extradition Treaty exists between Chile and Australia signed in 1993, which was invoked at the extradition request.
