The Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Edgardo Riveros Marín, is participating in the Meeting of UNASUR's Council of Foreign Ministers being held at Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, between May 22nd and 23rd.

This meeting reviewed the progress of the resolutions adopted by the Heads of State and Government of UNASUR, during the 2012 Lima Summit, with regard to the Inter-American Human Rights System.

In this regard, the Vice-Minister reaffirmed the value of the Inter-American system, recalling its contribution to the recovery of democracy in Chile. He expressed the willingness of our Government to continue promoting mechanisms for actual cooperation, promotion and protection of human rights in our region. He further recalled that for Chile it is crucial to continue to work towards universalization of the Inter-American Human Rights System.

Vice-Minister Riveros highlighted that the rapporteurs of the Human Rights Commission must attend to all categories of human rights, namely civil, political, economic, social and cultural. He also stressed the value of the work of the rapporteur for freedom of expression and the need for further concrete actions in other rapporteurs, mainly those serving concerns of the social agenda.

The Council of Foreign Ministers will, in turn, receive today a report from the Commission of Foreign Ministers that is supporting the dialogue process in Venezuela, among other matters proper to the UNASUR.
