Tenth anniversary of the International Mountain Day

In order to disseminate the importance of preserving and protecting mountain ecosystems for the country's development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Environment celebrated today the tenth anniversary of the International Mountain Day.

Since 2007, Chile is a member of the Mountain Partnership and is committed to creating a Mountain National Committee (CNM), with the purpose of bringing together government and private agencies to advise relevant authorities on mountain-related issues. The CNM will seek to meet the objectives set by the Mountain Partnership to improve the quality of life of human populations in the mountains and the sustainable management of mountain ecosystems.

The ceremony was led by the Director for  the Environment with the Foreign Ministry, Waldemar Coutts;  the Head of the Department of Natural Disasters and Biodiversity with the Ministry of the Environment, Rodrigo Guijón; and the Forestry Officer of the Regional Office of the  Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO), Hivy Ortiz. In addition, presentations were given by experts such as FAO Consultant Francisco Mendoza; Francisco Cereceda , Director of the Center for Environmental Technology at the Federico Santa Maria Technical University; Gonzalo Barcaza and Alexis Segovia from the Directorate General of Water at the Ministry of Public Works; and David Valdés, director of the Geographical Society for Andean Documentation  "AndesHandbook."
