The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno, arrived early this morning at La Moneda Palace, where, alongside President Sebastián Piñera, he watched the reading of The Hague ruling in the case concerning maritime delimitation between Chile and Peru.
"Today, we are taking the final steps of a dispute that has lasted many years in the history of the relations between Chile and Peru," said Minister Moreno upon his arrival at the Palace. He then highlighted the work done by Chile's defense team to show the background of this difference between Peru and Chile. "Our defense has clearly demonstrated that Chile and Peru had an agreement on the boundary that is currently in force, which all of us have known for the past 60 years. For that reason, today, when we depend on the Court's decision, we are waiting for this ruling calmly and confidently," he said.
"Our solidarity goes to the people of Arica, to its fishworkers, because this is an issue of interest not only to the people who work fishing in that area or to the city of Arica; this is an issue of interest to all Chileans," he said.
Also present were First Lady Cecilia Morel, the Minister of Finance, Felipe Larraín, and the Secretary General of Government, Cecilia Pérez.
