During the 28th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO),  held in London, Chile was reelected today with the second-highest vote in Latin America, after Mexico, as one of the 20 members who will comprise the Council of the organization in 2014 and 2015.

IMO is an international technical agency dedicated to the development of measures for shipping safety and protection, preventing pollution of the marine environment and other related issues.  Chile attaches great importance and strictly complies with the 50 conventions and protocols that IMO has adopted and over a thousand   codes and recommendations thereof.

Chile has continuously been a member of the IMO Council since 2002. This re-election is recognition of its active work there, in order to achieve high levels in the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation and the protection of the marine environment and coastal areas.
