The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, informed that the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, appointed lawyer and former Minister Mario Fernández Baeza to be the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Chile to Austria, a country which has already given its agreement.
Ambassador Fernández is Bachelor of Laws from the University of Chile and has studies on Political Science, Public International Law, History and Philosophy at Heidelberg University, where he got his Doctor's Degree.
The new Ambassador was Minister of the desks of National Defense and General Secretariat of the Presidency during Ricardo Lagos's administration, period in which he also served as Ambassador of Chile to the Federal Republic of Germany. Likewise, during the Administrations of presidents Patricio Aylwin and Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, he was Vice-Minister of the Defense.
Within his broad career, Mario Fernández was a Justice of the Chilean Constitutional Court; consultant and United Nations official to Santiago and Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is Costa Rica. Since 2013, he has been Counselor for the National Human Rights Institute.
The recently appointed Ambassador to Austria has developed a solid career in the academic and research area and has authored a number of publications on Public Law and Political Science.
