The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, held a working lunch with the members of Parliament of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Senate and House of Representatives, at which time he thanked them for the opportunity for dialogue regarding the possible scenarios for upcoming ruling of the International Court of Justice on the preliminary objection raised by Chile and whose decision will be announced on September 24, 2015.
The Secretary of State said that "we have discussed and talked about possible scenarios of the ruling and what these possibilities might be, and it is very clear that we are prepared for any outcome." He added that "we hope that the Court will grant the application of incompetence because the arguments that [we] have been presented are very solid arguments."
The Foreign Minister reiterated that Chile awaits the ruling with "serenity and confidence," while at the same time highlighting the sense of unity. "We are going to prepare in order to continue with the attitude of the State – a unitary and well-coordinated attitude that has been shown by the Government and the Opposition, Executive and Parliament – and that is a fundamental value of the position of our country."
Finally, the Minister was emphatic in maintaining that Chile is prepared. "The important thing here is to remember that this is a preliminary ruling on a procedural issue and that the priority is to defend the national interests of our country and territorial integrity."
