At the invitation of Her Excellency the President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, in in Chile on an official visit on February 26 and 27, 2016.
The presidents highlighted the excellent level of bilateral relations and the broad convergence that exists in regional and multilateral issues.
Bachelet and Rousseff both renewed their commitment to shared values of democracy, the promotion and protection of human rights, peace, the implementation of public policies to improve the quality of life of its citizens and promoting sustainable development with social inclusion.
Bilateral Issues
The presidents agreed to instruct their respective ministers to hold the first meeting of the Consultation Mechanism of Ministers of Foreign Affairs and of Defense on June 8 and 9, 2016.
They highlighted the level reached in bilateral trade in 2015, noting that in Latin America, Brazil is the largest trading partner of Chile, while Chile is the second trading partner of Brazil in South America. Also highlighted was the level of reciprocal investments and the positive effect the Agreement on Cooperation and Investment Facilitation will have, signed in November of last year. They reiterated their commitment to negotiate an agreement on public procurement and another on financial services in the course of this year.
They emphasized the progress in cooperation on Antarctic issues; science, technology and innovation; in trilateral cooperation; in cinematographic cooperation; consular cooperation; cooperation in tourism; and in field of human rights.
In addition, President Michelle Bachelet congratulated President Dilma Rousseff for the comprehensive plan that the Brazilian government is carrying out to address the complex situation caused by the Zika virus epidemic, with the support of the Chilean government in this task.
