The Permanent Representative of Chile to International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Armin Andereya, chaired the national delegation at the 59th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held in Vienna from September 14 to 18.
The General Conference of the IAEA is the assembly of all its members. At its annual session in September, recommendations and decisions of the Board of Governors are considered, including the program and the agency's budget, and the annual reports on nuclear safety, safeguards and technical cooperation, among others.
In his speech during the general debate, Ambassador Andereya emphasized the importance that Chile attaches to IAEA activities, particularly through its technical cooperation program which has facilitated the implementation of major projects in our country and in the region, which allow for achieving the benefits of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in various fields.
Ambassador Andereya also made a call to all countries to fulfill their commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), particularly in relation to the obligation to make concrete progress in the field of nuclear disarmament. The Permanent Mission of Chile, in its capacity as President of the Group of 77 and China, has the responsibility to present and negotiate various draft resolutions, among which include the draft resolution on strengthening technical cooperation activities; on non-nuclear technology applications; and the program of action for cancer therapy, among others.
