The Government of Chile expresses its deepest sorrow in front of the devastating consequences of the forest fire that began on Saturday, June 17 in the Pedrógão Grande zone in the Leiria region, 140 km from Lisbon. The fires have killed 62 people and left 63 hurt.
The forest fire has been devastating in terms of the number of victims. According to Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, it "is a calamity in a disproportionate human dimension".
The tragedy affects our fellow country, one of the first in giving us help when we suffered devastating fires in January. President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, and the Government of Chile have manifested to Portugal their condolences and solidarity in these difficult moments.
Furthermore, the Government of Chile has activated the necessary protocols to aid Portugal with material and human support. This has been communicated to the Portuguese authorities who have valued and thanked the quick response.
