The Government of Chile strongly condemns the attacks perpetrated by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in north Iraq that have caused numerous civilian deaths, including women and children, and that have aggravated the humanitarian situation existing in that country
Chile observes with alarm the violation –in certain cases with barbaric methods- for centuries of fundamental rights and freedoms of religious minorities present in Iraq whose members have had to leave their homes, risking their lives. Chile expresses its solidarity with the Iraqi Government and people in combatting violence and terrorism. At the same time, it urges to build bridges of political convergence, enabling the consolidation of an inclusive government that permits to equitably channel the demands of all social stakeholders and to implement effective mechanisms to counter the progress and influence of religious sectarianism and fundamentalism.
Chile reaffirms the universal validity of Human Rights, including the rights of minorities, the observation and respect of which are essential to democratic governance and social peace in multi-national, multi-religious and culturally diverse States. As non-permanent member of the Security Council, Chile is willing to negotiate a multilateral response to the security challenges that emerge in this region, in compliance with the UN Charter
