Beginning on January 1, 2015, Chile begins its month-long presidency of the United Nations Security Council, one of the principal organs of the UN whose primary responsibility is the maintenance of peace and international security. Previously, the country has held the presidency of the Council in October 1952, July 1953, May 1961, April 1962, April 1996, October 1997 and January 2004.
During its presidency, Chile will continue its efforts to strengthen effective multilateralism so that the Security Council may continue to make concrete support in the prevention and resolution of crises affecting international peace and security in different regions of the world.
Chile will act according to the founding principles of the United Nations: sovereign equality of States, non-intervention, enforcement and respect for international treaties, respect and promotion of human rights, democracy and peaceful resolution of disputes. Complex problems and challenges require global solutions based on cooperation and solidarity that the system of the United Nations makes possible. Regional contribution to global solutions is also a tactic that Chile wants to highlight.
During the UN Security Council presidency, our country will promote an agenda for strengthening the actions of the United Nations on three pillars: international peace and security, human rights, and development. Open discussions and briefings of the members of the Council will be suggested, and work will be based on proposals and action. The initiatives of Chile's presidency will be presented in a tentative work program, which will be submitted to the Security Council on January 5th.
Chile is concerned with post-conflict peacebuilding, inclusive development, the maintenance of international peace and security and the protection of civilians, especially women and girls affected by conflict. Also, we are interested in monitoring the situation in Haiti, as it is part of our regional priorities. We will propose that Council members go to Haiti in order to understand the current status of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) as well as the Haitian political process. The discussion of the role of women in peace and security and the protection of children in armed conflict will be promoted.
The presidency of Chile of the UN Security Council provides an opportunity for our country to contribute to the operation of an international system with a point of view that is based on the sound principles of our foreign policy. Chile will show that the way to ensure a safer and more stable world starts from the regional level.
