Foreign Minister Muñoz after a new day of dialogue between the government and the Venezuelan opposition: "We have made an effort to reach a concrete agreement"

Saturday, January 13, 2018

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, met with representatives of the Venezuelan government and the opposition in the Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) for 12 hours. Chile is an accompanying country in this process of dialogue alongside Mexico, Bolivia and Nicaragua.

Around midnight this Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said it was an extensive and intense negotiating session. He made his statements when he announced that the meeting will continue today. "The facilitators have made an effort to reach a concrete agreement that will represent an electoral solution to the crisis in Venezuela, and I hope that tomorrow (today) we will achieve something more definitive", he said.

In Santo Domingo, he also highlighted the "determination and leadership" of Dominican President Danilo Medina.

"What we want is democracy, respect for human rights, an electoral solution, no more polarization, a solution to the social crisis that this country is experiencing", said the Secretary of State.

"We want to contribute and will continue to do so until we see results, or else come to the conclusion that progress is no longer possible. We're not there yet, so we need to make additional efforts and we'll see what happens in the next few days", he said.

The meeting continues today at the Dominican Chancellery and Chile is represented by Gabriel Gaspar and Ambassador Juan Eduardo Eguiguren.
