Chilean literature is one step closer to the German-speaking world since the third week of March, with a series of activities carried out in German cities by writers Lina Meruane and Antonia Torres. An important part of this program will be conducting a conference at the Cervantes Institute in Berlin and the participation of both women at the International Leipzig Book Fair, which will take place between March 17 and 20.

This fair brings together writers, booksellers and publishers from around the world and has increased in popularity in recent years, achieving an average influx of over 160 thousand visitors. The key to this success lies in the proximity established between authors and readers – the literary festival "Leipzig reads" (Leipzig Liest), for example, happens parallel to the fair and is present in every corner of the city (cafes, theaters, squares).

In addition to participating in this fair, poet Antonia Torres (1975) will present her book "Umzug" (Moving) at the University of Düsseldorf, translated into German by this university, with support from the Translation fund of the National Council for Culture and the Arts. She will also be in the city of Bonn, with an agenda that includes a workshop on translations and readings of her work.

Meanwhile, Lina Meruane (1970), one of the most outstanding Chilean narrative voices today, formed part of the selected authors in the last issue (dedicated to Chile) of the German magazine ALBA, which will also be presented in the context of the activities in that country.

The visit of Meruane and Torres to Germany is as a result of a DIRAC project, which is part of the outreach program of works by Chilean authors that have been translated into several languages. The activity follow a path paved some years ago, in which the Embassy of Chile in Germany has been heavily involved, with ongoing collaboration with the International Book Fair in Leipzig and in local cultural institutions.
