The Chilean Government supported the decision made by the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), adopted last September 27, which established an accelerated program for achieving the complete elimination of chemical weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic, under a strict international verification regime. In addition, it reiterates its support for the implementation of the "Framework for Elimination of Syrian Chemical Weapons" and the achievement of a peaceful solution to the serious armed conflict in that country.

The Chilean Government welcomed and particularly appreciates the adoption of Resolution 2118; unanimously adopted by the members of the UN Security Council, which resulted in the elimination of all chemical weapons from the Syrian territory, emphasizing that the use of this type of weapons, anywhere, pose a threat to international peace and security.

Resolution 2118 enables the Security Council to assume and fully implement the functions that the international community has entrusted to it through the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations, in the consideration and solution of situations that –such as the one in Syria –endanger international peace and security.

These decisions made by the UN Security Council and the OPCW Executive Council reaffirm the irreplaceable role of multilateralism and international legal instruments to achieve the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Chile appreciates the Syrian Arab Republic's adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention and hopes that this will give new momentum to the universalization of such instrument and lead to the objective of achieving a world free of chemical weapons.

The Chilean Government reiterates its call to all the parties involved to join this endeavor and to fulfill their commitments in good faith.
